BOOK FOR SALE: Silent Tears: One black family’s quiet tolerance of racial prejudice. Corbin, Kentucky, 1919-1993. In 1919, a time marked by racial violence across the South, a mob in Corbin, Kentucky rounded up most of the black rail workers and loaded them on a train for Knoxville. Emma Woods, her daughter Clara and threeyear-old granddaughter Alberta lived near the depot. Protected from the mob by white friends, they continued to live in Corbin until their death. Howard Nolan, a porter on the L & N Railroad, became a boarder at the Woods’ home in the thirties and lived in Corbin until his death in 1993. These almost silent residents of Corbin describe one family’s way of coping in a community scarred with the reputation of racial prejudice. They quietly did their work refusing to push themselves into positions that might generate controversy. They found encouragement from a few white residents, a black church and friends in Williamsburg and relatives in Danville. Published in 2018, 132 pages paperback, six photos. Cost $10 and $3 postage. Order from Author Bill D. Whittaker, 105 Terrace Manor, Glasgow, KY 42141.
