Bardstown student minister joins convention staff as family consultant

PIKEVILLE—Matt Flanagan, discipleship pastor and student minister at Parkway Baptist Church in Bardstown, has joined the Kentucky Baptist Convention to serve as a consultant to the state's churches in ways to improve ministry to children, adolescents, teenagers and their families.

Flanagan was unanimously approved by the Administrative Committee as the KBC's family ministry consultant in a Nov. 11 meeting in Pikeville.

"Matt is uniquely qualified and is the obvious choice for this position," said Steve Rice, the KBC Church Consulting and Revitalization Team leader. "Matt knows student ministry and is already mentoring student ministers across the state."

Flanagan, who holds a master's degree in theology from Campbellsville University, has served in student ministry at several churches, including First Baptist in Jesup, Ga., Calvary Baptist in Danville and First Baptist in Junction City.

"Matt has no problem serving where service is needed, and always points those around him to the cross of Christ," said Blake Sapp, youth pastor at Dripping Spring Baptist Church in Olmstead. "His interpersonal skills, discipleship ability, organization and dedication to his work and most importantly to the Lord would allow him to serve well as the family ministry consultant."

Parkway Baptist Church Pastor James Carroll said Flanagan's resume is topnotch with two less quantifiable characteristics set him apart. "First, he loves the local church and is committed to her good," he said. "Second, his personal integrity and Christlike character have encouraged and challenged me as we've served together." (KBC)
